Your
flight will very likely come into the state
capital, Honolulu two islands to the north.
The tradewinds blow from the upper right
to the lower left of the map (gray arrow).
For your Maui-bound leg, to get headwinds,
the jet you are in will probably have to
circle and come over the valley.
The
valley is inhabited, and nobody wants the
roar of jets coming in low. Also, the winds
can be forced together between the two peaks
creating increased localized winds. Be ready.
Your pilot will maintain a high altitude
and drop abruptly onto the runway in Lihue
(blue "X").
Smaller
aircraft known as "puddle jumpers"
can then fly you to Kaanapali (green "X")
or Hana (brown "X"). The good
news is that driving is cheaper and worth
while. Some of our most memorable moments
and beautiful images came from simply driving
around the island.

Tip:
If you plan on going to West Maui or up to Haleakala,
get something that has ground clearance and preferably
four wheel drive.
Check
with your rental companies, some will not cover
you if you take your car on the rough roads of
West Maui or on parts of the volcano.
