The
Blue Pacific : The
shore drops off sharply from the sand, and as the Pacific
is not nice to shorelines, you will not be standing
on soft sand. Go a few feet out, and you are either
on coral or volcanic rock.
Neither
of which is soft.
I
remember going down into the water from a beautiful
black sand beach, and getting my feet, ankles and shins
beat all to heck and back. There were lots of basketball
sized lava rocks to step on, slide off of, and grate
off skin on the way down.
Maui
has a red sand beach (the Big Island has a green sand
beach). Getting to red sand beach is dangerous, and
steep. The ground is crumbly, so take care. RSB is also
often used for nude sun bathing, so be warned. Red Sand
Beach is near Hana.
You
will not be attacked by sharks.
The
lifeguard knows the sea, listen and obey.
The
Pacific is ka-hold cold! If you have a scuba suit, bring
it. I vacationed with my family in a cabin on the Pickerel
River north of Lake Superior when I was a kid. Swimming
in the Pacific off Maui is that kind of cold.
If
you are not a good swimmer, there is no lifeguard or
you are not sure: don't.
Wear
sunscreen. The tradewinds will keep your skin cool,
so you won't feel a burn until it is way, way too late.
