Makena
Surf - (exclusive to Maui.US by Lottie Tagupa)
It's a thirty minute drive from the Kahului Airport
past the bawdy beachfront eateries and vacation condos
of Kihei and even past the elegant upscale luxury resorts
of Wailea, the Makena Surf is an oceanfront complex
that offers families ample space, privacy and comfort.
Ask any long
time local and they will say things like "Remember when
the Makena Surf was the only condo on that beach..."
or that place got busy when they built the golf course…"
Well, it is true.
The Makena
Surf was one of the very original buildings in the area.
Today the
building has been nipped and tucked in the all the right
places and what has remained is the unobstructed ocean
views, views of Kahoolawe and Molokini and of course
the glorious Maui sunsets.
The complex
has been transformed into a vacation condominium with
all the modern amenities.
Each individually
owned and decorated, the ambiance is comfort, and homey
amenities that will make you never want to leave.
Each unit
unique in furnishings and layout, the condos are spacious
and airy with the smallest offering over 1200 square
feet with large private lanais.
Today it
is stylish, welcoming and serene with hardly a sign
of age anywhere.
What was
originally one pool has been expanded to two, with the
addition of two whirlpool spas.
There are
four tennis courts and two even have lights for cooler
evening matches, free tennis clinics and special golf
and tennis rates at nearby resorts at Makena and Wailea.
Along with
a gated entrance, the Makena Surf has barbecue grills,
free parking, daily housekeeping service, wash and dryer,
concierge service, beach towels and beach chairs.
The area
boasts no less than four courses two at the Makena Resort
and another two at Wailea.
Also nearby
are many shops at the Shops at Wailea including a general
store with souvenirs, drinks snacks along with beer
wine and liquors.
As for shopping
there are several luxury boutiques including BCBG, White
House/Black Market and Louis Vuitton.
There are several wonderful
restaurants that include Tommy Bahama, Longhi's and
a wonderful sushi izakaya called simply, Kai.
Wailea resorts offer lounges
complete with live entertainment, upscale restaurants
like Spago at the nearby Four Seasons Maui and Nick's
Fishmarket for al-fresco dining at the Kealani.
The Spa Grande at the Grand
Wailea is the best spa in the islands.
Oversized and magnificent, it's
certainly the spot for massages, bath and body treatments.
The best part about this older
building is that the guestrooms are oversized, not compact
like they build them these days.
The beachfront buildings have
been built in a terraced fashion where units are set
back farther on each floor for added privacy.
There are several buildings
on the property with the best being in B or beachfront
building.
Building A and C are newest
but are not located on the beach, while the other buildings
offer more privacy situated on a lava bluff with lovely
ocean views.
There is a choice of two, three
and four bedroom units all of which are non-smoking,
have central air conditioning, full kitchens, dining
areas and lanais that are front row to the gorgeous
views.
