Car
Rental And Driving On Maui : It
is not like Key West, you will need a car. Maui is not
pedestrian friendly. Roads can be highway speeds, even
if it is posted to 45 mph, there is nowhere for you
to walk. The exception is within Lahaina itself.
1
- A taxi to take you from the airport to a resort will
cost more than a week's rental. Avoid using a taxi if
at all possible.
2
- Get four wheel drive. If not four wheel drive, get
something like an SUV with ground clearance. You will
need it for West Maui and the southbound leg of East
Maui. It
will help for the Hana Highway as there are often forest
debris on the road.
3
- Stop for stands, you can get some really great stuff
like fresh coconut. It helps the locals make ends meet
and you meet some very colorful characters.
4
- If you smoke, don't buy any pot. This is only mentioned
because there are places where people may approach the
car. The guy selling it is either a local thug who will
sell you catnip or a cop. Don't risk it.
Be nice about it when you say no.
We
were offered some to buy in rural West Maui. It looked
like something a cat threw up!
5
- Take digital pictures of the rental car on pickup
and before dropping it off. Just a CYA in case they
claim there are new dings and want to charge you.
6
- Fill the tank before you turn it back in to the rental
company, and keep the receipt in case of any funny business.
They will drop a hefty surcharge on you if you bring
it back without filling it up.
